Whether you’re creating a presentation, a document, or an e-learning course, graphic design is what brings your content to life. The importance of graphic design can’t be understated—good graphics can take an otherwise boring piece of content and turn it into something that is both engaging and memorable.
Of course, this is easier said than done. We’d all love to be master graphic designers, but the truth is most us never anticipated needing a graphic design skill set. However, here’s some good news: most graphic design principles are extremely simple.
This last week, I hosted a free graphic design webinar for non-graphic designers. Here are the main three graphic design tips I covered during my webinar.
Tip 1: Use More Than One Font
One of the easiest and most impactful graphic design changes you can make is diversifying your fonts. This means doing away with the default fonts you’ve become accustomed to using and selecting new fonts that communicate a sense of personality and design.
Selecting new fonts is easy. I tend to follow a three-font rule, selecting specific fonts for titles, headings, and body content. On occasion, I will also select a fourth font for emphasis.

When presenting your graphic design portfolio digitally, it’s important to do so in an attractive and organized way. Keep your portfolio’s theme simple; you want to use your website as a platform to exhibit your graphic design pieces. Don’t use overpowering themes with elements such as bold, neon background colors. Use neutral colors and designs for your background page instead. You can also create or find a theme that complements your graphic design samples. If possible, add your own design to your website theme to make your portfolio completely about your pieces.
2. Make your portfolio easy to navigate through
Not everyone is Internet savvy, so be sure to organize your online portfolio in a simple and easy-to-use way for your visitors. If clients can’t figure out how to navigate your website, they may leave the page quickly, which amounts to lost professional opportunities. Organize your website by adding links to navigate to other areas of the site. For example, create an “about” link directing visitors to a page that tells them more about your professional background. Your logo is the face of your brand. It’s the representation of your brand’s image, and it’s used to establish loyalty. To put it frankly, visual expression is very important to consumers and your logo is your biggest tool. If your logo is blurry, it isn’t modern, or if it doesn’t connect to what you sell, then you’ll have a much harder time getting customers to connect with your brand.
2.) There isn’t a clear solidarity among all your designs.
All of your graphics should have a solidarity among them. They should share a common theme and color palette. When your designs share a uniform style, then your brand’s appearance, in turn, looks uniform. A uniform design will carry a stronger and more clear message than a brand that has a jumbled and random assortment of graphics with no direction.

Be sure to use a consistent hierarchy of headers. In HTML, these look like H1, H2, H3, and so forth. These headers convey the structure of your content, helping readers understand how your content is organized. Think about this structure when choosing font sizes and weights, so that an H3 doesn’t look more visually prominent than its parent H2.

The first step in creating a logo design should be researching and brainstorming. Before you begin any of the design elements of your logo you should take the following question into inconsideration:

1. Start with a Good Idea
A great poster isn’t about a great aesthetic, it’s about a clever idea that’s skinned with a great aesthetic. Start out with a sketch, not on Pinterest. Start by filling a few pages with ideas. Once you have one you love, then start to think about the aesthetic of the illustration or lettering. The idea should drive the visual, not the other way around. In the example above, I was designing a poster for a creative conference called the Inside Job. I first decided that I wanted to design a pencil/gun, then I decided to illustrate it with a mono-weight black stroke to help combine the visual language of the pencil and the gun.
2. Two in One
Sometimes I start with a word list. I list out nouns that evoke the message of the poster. Once I have my list, I start to combine them visually through sketches. In the poster above, the two words were “pencil” and “heart.” The message of the poster was that Target loves education. A poster of just a pencil or just a heart would be trite and pretty expected. The combination of the two elements creates something unique and ownable.

Pairing fonts is one of the most common areas that stumps people who are starting out with graphic design.
A great rule of thumb is to choose fonts with high contrast. This will help the fonts balance each other out while still creating a feature in your design.
2. Match Colors Within Your Designs
Creating color harmony is one of the most effective ways to make your designs stand out.
One way to create harmony is to match the colors you use for your graphic elements — such as fonts or text holders — with a background image.
You can find the exact color from an image using a color picker tool, which will provide you with a hex code — the six digit code that identifies an exact color on the color wheel.
Hex codes are an important concept for graphic design newbies to learn. They’re what you’ll use to construct all the color palettes for your designs!

2. Happy with a Past Designer? Work with them Again
If you previously have worked with a designer on a project and enjoyed working with them, call them up first! This will work in your favor because they already have an idea on what you like and don’t like. Also, they are very familiar with your business and know what your main message is, and the audience you are targeting.
3. Don’t Expect the 1st Draft to be Perfect
Remember, it’s a first draft for a reason. If it is not perfect, that is okay! Graphic designers love to collaborate and want to hear your input. It might take a couple times to finally reach your final product, so be patient and also speak clearly about what exactly
